Linde Gas: Truck Training Simulation

Linde Gas transports industrial gases, including hydrogen and industrial and medical oxygen, by truck to customer sites across more than 100 countries. The fleet counts thousands of vehicles and drivers, each delivery ending in a loading or unloading procedure that has to be executed correctly regardless of location, tank configuration, or the gas involved.

The Challenge

New drivers traditionally learned unloading procedures through shadowing, riding with an experienced colleague for weeks or months until that colleague judged them ready to work alone. For the entire period, the experienced driver could not fully perform their own job, so one training seat effectively cost two people’s time. The workforce is also multinational and largely non native to the countries they operate in, which made safety critical instruction harder to standardize and easier to get lost in translation. On top of that, tank and cistern configurations differ by manufacturer, age, and customer site, so a driver who shadowed at a handful of locations still had no guarantee of having seen the situation waiting at the next one.

The Solution

For Linde Virtual Academy, we built a standalone VR training simulator for gas loading and unloading. Delivering it meant mapping the real unloading process down to its smallest operational steps, then rebuilding it as digital twins of the actual tank trucks and cisterns drivers work with, including the variation in configuration they encounter across different customer sites. The simulator covers different gas types, including hydrogen and industrial and medical oxygen, and trains drivers on unexpected situations and fault conditions before they meet them on a real site for the first time. The training content was implemented in multiple languages, addressing the fact that the driver workforce is not native to a single language or country.

The Result

Drivers can now practice unloading procedures independently and repeatedly in a safe virtual environment, without occupying an experienced colleague’s time. Onboarding is now measured in weeks rather than the several months typical of shadowing, and new drivers arrive at their first real delivery having already handled the fault scenarios and site variations the simulator covers.
